Biography

Noel Morera Cruz is a multidisciplinary Cuban artist whose career is distinguished by an open, experimental practice spanning painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, sculpture, goldsmithing, ceramics and stage design. He trained at the Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro in Havana, where he studied from 1973 to 1979, and complemented that training with studies in screen printing at the Taller René Portocarrero. He is a member of the Taller de Artes Gráficas de La Habana and of UNEAC.

Over a career of more than four decades, Morera has developed a visual language of his own, marked by figuration, imagination and a critical, irreverent gaze on human experience. His work draws on humour, irony and the transformation of the everyday as ways to question appearances and to propose other ways of looking at reality. His iconography moves between human figures, collective situations and scenes charged with symbolic elements, in a constant exploration of the possibilities of the image.

His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Cuba, Spain, the United States, Mexico, Turkey, Italy, England, Ecuador and Canada, including projects linked to several editions of the Havana Biennial. His solo exhibitions include Postales de La Habana, Balcones de Cuba, Un minuto de silencio, La mirada ajena and Fiesta de Noel en Estambul. His work is held in collections in Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Morera’s distinctions include first prize at the Salón de la Ciudad de La Habana in 2002 and first place in the 1998 competition for the mural project of the CIMEX building. His practice has also extended into public space and into interdisciplinary projects that connect the visual arts with design, stage design, furniture, fashion and film.

Since arriving in Miami, Morera has continued to develop a body of work deeply tied to his Cuban experience and memory, without reducing his artistic language to a literal representation of Cuba. In 2026 his work was presented in Miami at a multidisciplinary gathering that included the unveiling of a new mural, paintings, sculptures and furniture, as well as a documentary project devoted to his career and creative process. He currently lives in North Miami.

Noel Morera’s work rests, ultimately, on a deeply personal conception of creation: the artist understands the image as a way of transforming and reinterpreting the world from his own perspective. His production rejects rigid boundaries between disciplines and turns every support and every material into a possibility for expression.
